Did you know that your brain can perform an estimated 10 quadrillion operations per second?

Did you know that it is mostly your subconscious mind that is using your brain capacity? Take a moment to think about what is making your blood flow through your veins, what is keeping your body at the perfect core temperature day by day – what is continiuously sending messages to the 60 trillion cells in your body? It is your subconscious mind.

Your subconscious mind is making sure you are alive and well and it is extremely powerful – it even directs most of your thoughts during your day – if you let it. There is one thing though that the subconscious mind can not do. It cannot distinguish between a real event vs. you just thinking about a real event. What does that mean?

For example: if you have a nightmare and you wake up and your heart is pounding and you are bathed in sweat – your subconscious mind did not know that it was not a “real” event. It could not tell the difference!

This is also why there is strong power in the placebo effect. Not only can a placebo pill help with an ailment if the person believes that it is real medicine and will help – the New England Journal of Medicine conducted a study where patients with the same knee condition that came in for surgery were split into two groups. One group received the surgery, and the second group – with permission of family members – received a fake surgery with the same small incisions made to make the patient think that the surgery took place. Both groups reported the same success after the surgery!

When you think about the power of the placebo effect, also think about the opposite scenario. People literally think themselves sick, if they continuously worry about what disease they might have. A hypochondriac develops symptoms of a disease, just because of worrying about having that disease.

What you hold in your mind is shaping your reality.

On average we have about 60,000 thoughts a day. Most of these thoughts are the same thoughts we already thought about yesterday – and most of them are negative. We worry about things that happened in the past, or we worry about the future. This worry and stress releases Cortisol – a stress hormone into your system – which weakens your immune system, inhibits the functions of your white blood cells, increases risk of infection, and even promotes weight gain.

Think about how much negative thoughts are affecting your life today. You can retrain your subconscious mind and become mindful of your thoughts. Your thoughts create you – so what could be more important then controlling your own thoughts?
