Once, or a thousand times, today can be the day you make “your quit” stick.

One of the largest published studies (by Chocklingam, Viswesvaran, et al., 1992) comparing the effectiveness of 15 different smoking cessation methods, was published in the Journal of Applied Psychology. The research showed that Hypnosis was proven to be more effective at enabling people to quit smoking than:

  • Smoking clinics, smoke aversion techniques, educational programs, group withdrawal clinics, etc.
  • Self-care or trying to quite by yourself (more than 2 times more effective).
  • Nicotine gum (more than 2 times more effective).
  • Physician intervention (3 times more effective).

Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical that binds to receptors in the brain, producing a reaction that creates a biological craving. There is some evidence that Nicotine is as addictive as heroin or cocaine, at least in some people with a particular biochemical profile. However nicotine is not the only problem, over time a smoker develops an emotional and mental dependence. This addicts people to smoking—or whatever form of nicotine delivery they choose, including chewing tobacco, snuff and vaping. Many ex-smokers say that quitting smoking was the hardest thing they have ever done.
There are two distinct phases that ex-smokers move through to become a permanent non-smoker.

  • The first phase is the nicotine addiction withdrawal phase. Nicotine begins to reduce in the body within the first hour of quitting and is mostly out of the body within 4 days; yet chemical withdrawal symptoms can vary from between 2 or 3 days, up to several weeks.
  • After the withdrawal phase some definitions consider you a non-smoker and now your enter a second phase dealing with the emotional addiction. Some ex-smokers say that stopping smoking is like losing a friend. Certain activities, feelings, and people are linked to your smoking. When you encounter these activities they can “trigger” your urge to smoke. Getting through this phase is what determines if you remain a non-smoker for life.  Current research suggests that stopping smoking at any age can be extremely beneficial.
